Revenue Solutions (RSI)

At Massive, we believe innovation is industry-dependent. Some verticals embrace change seamlessly. Others require more incentive to evolve.

Government agencies generally fall into the latter group. As long-standing institutions, many governing bodies still rely on obsolete technologies that have worked in the past but fail to serve modern citizens’ needs.

And regardless of your political leanings, governments are unequivocally responsible for administering essential services, upholding human rights, and shaping the future communities in which we live, work, and play.

So who are the strategic partners behind the scenes helping governments serve their citizens more effectively through cutting-edge technology? Enter Revenue Services, Inc. (RSI).

Since its inception in 1996, RSI has built its reputation as the trusted, leading taxation software provider to over 65 governing bodies at the state, county, and municipal levels across North America.

The transformational impact RSI brings to governments is astounding. But RSI’s brand and website failed to reflect the commitment to innovation and cutting-edge technology that had powered its well-earned prestige.

That’s why they engaged Massive: to craft them a more humanistic brand and digital presence that elevated their value propositions and served as an enticing first impression for prospective talent.

Read on for the full breakdown of how Massive helped RSI modernize—and humanize—its brand identity, setting the company up for continued impact in the decades to come.

Progress made together

Massive’s Brand Identity + Positioning process begins with a series of collaborative, agency-facilitated extraction sessions that help us excavate our clients’ core values, unique selling propositions, and guiding principles.

The Corporate Brand Identity Matrix is the branding framework—developed by Stephen A. Greyser and Mats Urde in a 2019 Harvard Business Review—which often spearheads the process and is an exercise that resonated deeply with RSI’s team.

“The Brand Matrix was pivotal in crystalizing RSI’s purpose and establishing consistency across its internal and external messaging. That’s the real magic of the framework—cohesion.
— René Thomas, Partner + Executive Creative Director

RSI’s Brand Core: “It’s our responsibility to build trust in government because it creates a fair, equal, and better society. RSI delivers high-quality technology and solutions so that governments can deliver to their people.”

Our discovery sessions helped us tap into the fundamental idea that more efficient governance equals better-served constituents. This, in turn, enhances civic faith in governing institutions and encourages societal harmony. We discovered that RSI’s “end users” were the citizens their government partners serve at the heart of it all. Because RSI helps make governments more efficient through cutting-edge technology and unwavering collaboration, governments are empowered to serve their people better. Through these findings, we penned an apt tagline, “Progress made together,” which captures this guiding dogma.

A humanized approach to tax software

With RSI’s brand blueprints in place, it was up to our creative strategists to parlay these findings into a more human brand representing RSI’s human-focused, collaborative culture. On the brand messaging side, our focal considerations included but were not limited to:

  • Emphasize their consultative approach to partnerships
  • Bring bringing their brand story to life through vivid mission, vision, and value statements
  • Creating an authentic communicative system, tone, and voice to compel prospective clients and entice top talent

“Speaking to employees and RSI’s partners, we learned that working at and with RSI was an exceptional experience. We wanted to give their users a glimpse into what that was like, as an additional value proposition to complement their industry-leading suite of SaaS products.”

– Prem Sai Ramani, Director of Strategy

The result was a library of foundational brand messaging that emphasized the company’s core tenets:

Clear mission and vision statements:

    • Mission: To streamline government operations and improve citizen services through the delivery of transformative technologies.”
    • Vision: To be the preferred collaborative partner delivering world-class solutions to enable governments and empower citizens.”

A set of future-proof values and dedicated Careers page:

    • Integrity
    • Customer Commitment
    • Caring About People
    • Innovation
    • Inclusion
    • Responsibility

And positioning content to introduce their leadership team:

    • “RSI is about people. Passionate and engaged, we bring the interests of employees, customers, and citizens to the forefront and are dedicated to creating a better world that we can all be proud of.”

Fortunately, RSI’s team are such delightful people that we didn’t have to stretch the truth to define the human side of their business. Or purpose, as we like to call it.

Designed for collaboration

Now let’s talk design strategy. Our task was to craft a modern, accessible brand that embodied RSI’s established credibility and conveyed innovation while remaining scalable and highly approachable to all users.

We set out to build a brand and website that humanized their organization, which we landed upon after multiple conversations with their team and their vision for the brand. One that encapsulated RSI’s “WHY:” to streamline government functionality and facilitate more meaningful change for citizens.

“It didn’t take long to learn the real magic behind RSI’s beloved technology and unparalleled reputation are its people and collaborative culture. Beyond ensuring the new website communicated credibility and its innovative spirit, real success meant establishing a creative direction that placed RSI’s people and culture centre stage with authentic photography, accessible design, and ample white space.

– René Thomas, Partner + Executive Creative Director

A website built for growth

While accessibility, user experience (UX), and the backend authoring experience (AX) may not draw the headlines, they’re indispensable in building sustainable branded websites.

RSI was no exception. The company needed a versatile suite of pages and modules to demonstrate key value propositions and engage specific target audiences with unique objectives.

Our solutions were as follows (as they are for all of Massive’s website builds):

  • An intuitive site architecture that facilitated seamless user exploration of RSI’s core service offerings and products by Industry and platform.
  • Flexible, modular page templates affording RSI the freedom to emphasize specific aspects of RSI’s product for distinct target audiences, including making the company’s more technical and detailed information more easily digestible for key stakeholders.
  • A collaborative effort to categorize RSI’s complex and often tailored service offerings into easily digestible website content. We struck a delicate balance of featuring platform technical specifications, consultative service offerings, and industry-specific knowledge to communicate RSI’s value while being clear, concise, and consistent.

Breaking new ground with RSI

Overall, this has to be one of the more rewarding projects we’ve taken on in recent memory.

We knew our partnership with RSI would help them break new ground and enhance government efficiency and citizen engagement across North America.

RSI ultimately walked away with a new brand and website that reflected who they are and set them up for success in client relations, recruiting, and public engagement. We’re proud to have been their trusted partner in elevating their digital presence.
